FREE Courses Currently Running : 2014

Natural Flair workshops usually run with a maximum of 12 people and are designed to be fun and very interactive. All attendees enjoy sharing experiences and learning together. I facilitate each workshop and am a very experienced trainer and facilitator with a 14 year background in learning and development. I am also a licenced facilitator for Positive Parenting Publications & Programmes, the Family Links Parenting Puzzle, Protective Behaviours and the Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities Parent Education Programme. I am quality assured to deliver parenting programmes and training workshops for Herts County Council.

The overall aim of the workshops are to:

  • Encourage parents and build confidence
  • Develop good parent/child relationships
  • Help parents to recognise the good and positive things they already do and encourage them to aspire to be the best parent they can be
  • Help think about any changes which could be made to personal parenting styles
  • Give time and support to think through some different ideas on parenting

 

Parenting Raising under 5's: What every parent should know / and Raising Kid's in the 21st Century (5-11's focus)

There are six core workshops in all focusing on different areas of parenting. Participants are advised to attend all workshops to achieve maximum benefit. Sessions covered include:

  • What Children really need - encouragement and praise, understanding that each child has a unique and different personality,
  • Developing Emotional Security - Self Esteem and why it's important, different ways we can show love to our children, (bonding with your baby) how we can make them feel loved and why it's important, active listening skills.
  • Loving Limits - developing a loving discipline style for your family.
  • Keeping Safe - the dangers children face, risks of playing unsupervised inside and outside the home, using babysitters, bullying, talking about sex, safe screen time (TV, DVD's, computers and computer games). This session also introduces some basic protective behaviour strategies.
  • Keeping Sane - allowing you, the parent, to realise you have needs too!
 

 

Teenage Mums and BabiesPositive Parenting for Young Mums

This is a course for young parents aged between 16-19 years offering the opportunity to meet other young parents and share experiences. All participants will learn how to boost their child's self esteem, develop coping strategies and tactics for introducing a loving discipline style and improve self confidence.

 

Teenagers silhouetteUnderstanding Teens: The Gross Stuff & The Ground Rules !

There are six core workshops in all focusing on different areas of parenting teenagers. Participants are advised to attend all workshops to achieve maximum benefit. Sessions covered include:

  • The parent / young person relationship & why it is tough being a teenager
  • Parenting styles
  • Communication
  • What to say about sex and sexuality
  • Tools for handling conflict
  • Identify strategies to raise aspirations and boost self-esteem
  • There is an optional session covering step-parenting

 

Managing Anger & Building Resilience in the family (Time Out from Anger)

This course runs with 6 workshops in all, focusing on managing and understanding anger generally, and also how to help children manage theirs. Participants are advised to attend all sessions to achieve maximum benefit as each week builds on areas from previous sessions. Below I have shown the basic topics for each week. Between sessions attendees are encouraged to complete post workshop tasks to consolidate their learning and in particular keep an “Anger Diary”.

Resources have been chosen and tailored to ensure good adult education practice with a clear purpose and range of learning methods etc. Whilst the strategies shown are proven ways to cope with anger in any situation, some examples & practical exercises focus on managing anger in a family/parenting context.

What will be covered each week ?

Session 1: Understanding Anger Covering: raising awareness of causes and effects of anger, looking at what our personal anger triggers are, introducing the anger process through discussing behavioural responses to conflict, understanding aggressive, passive, passive-aggressive and assertive behavioural responses. The use of positive self talk, the importance of self esteem in managing anger, the use of the rage gage and keeping an Anger Diary.

Session 2: Coping with Anger Covering: continue to raise awareness of causes and effects of anger, to recognise early warning signs in order to manage anger at different points, recognising the impact of our personal beliefs and values, expectations of ourselves and others, I statements, introduction of “ABC” of anger management and learning additional strategies & exercises for development of a personal anger “toolkit”

Session 3: Managing Anger In The Family Covering: enabling parents to respond helpfully to children’s anger using strategies learnt so far, helping parents learn how to model and explain anger management strategies to their children, be more aware of the problems anger can cause children, and why children feel angry. The importance of “feelings” words and developing emotional literacy. Understanding the importance of managing children’s anger and helping their children to understand and identify their early warning signs..

Session 4: Helping Children Manage Anger Covering: Discussing managing anger in school, handling rage, feelings and what we do with them, helping children to manage stress and developing good communication

Session 5: Helping Children Manage Anger Covering: Age appropriate strategies which children and young people can be taught to manage anger and develop assertiveness.

Session 6: Developing Tools For A Calmer Family Life Covering: Finalisation of conflict resolution tool kit, “The Anger Gremlin” model, Anger management games; evaluation and presentation of certificates.

 

Special NeedsSpecial Needs

This course material can be adapted to cover both low and high level special needs. This 7 session course aims to help share feelings and experiences, and come up with your own solutions to problems on the basis of what works - not what's mean't to work! Topics covered include:

  • Helping self esteem
  • Coping with feelings
  • Understanding and managing behaviour
  • Home / school issues and the wider family

 

Special NeedsLiving and Understanding ADHD

This 6 week course aims to help share feelings and experiences around parenting a child with ADHD - it is designed to help parents with the challenges that are unique to them and focuses on stategies that are practical and realistic empowering the parent to try new things, as standard parenting advice often doesn't work, leaving parents feeling isolated and stranded. - This very supportive course will enable parents to finish the course with a good toolkit of strategies to use.

 

Special NeedsLiving and Understanding ASD

This 6 week course aims to help share feelings and experiences around parenting a child with ASD - it is designed to help parents with the challenges that are unique to them and it focuses on stategies that are practical and realistic empowering the parent to try new things - as standard parenting advice often doesn't work, leaving parents feeling isolated and stranded. - This very supportive course will enable parents to finish the course with a good toolkit of strategies to use.

 

Special NeedsThe Family Links Parenting Puzzle

The Family Link Parenting Puzzle Nurturing Programme is a 10 week course which helps improve relationships and emotional well-being within families. It is a universal programme used widely with families of children aged 2-15. It builds on the skills parents already have and suggests lots of ways to improve family life and manage the behaviour of children. The Nurturing Programme helps to improve parents' confidence. It suggests ways of maintaining effective positive discipline while gaining more understanding of your own and your child's emotional needs.

The Nurturing Programme is designed to:

  • promote emotional and mental health and wellbeing
  • enhance relationship and nurturing skills
  • build self-esteem and confidence
  • encourage positive approaches to behaviour management
  • build empathy

This is a 10 session course based on Protective Behaviours and is highly participative and effective.

A one-off 2 hour workshop which can be tailored to have either an under 5's or 5-11 focus.

 

Confident Parenting = A Happy You ! (Assertiveness Skills for Parents)

This workshop runs for 2 hours. Objectives:

  • Understanding what it means to be assertive, passive and aggressive
  • Understanding the impact that these 3 behaviour traits (physical or emotional) can have on our family relationships.
  • Understanding how we can become more assertive both in the way we talk and our physical actions and how this will improve our confidence, family relationships and parenting skills allowing us to become the parent we want to be and bring harmony to our home.

 

Stress-busting Tips for Parents

This workshop runs for 2 hours. Objectives:

  • To look at what causes us stress and how it effects family life
  • Understand and recognise our personal early warning signs
  • Discover & develop strategies for coping with stress

 

Step-Parenting
This workshop runs for 2 hours. Objectives:

  • To illustrate the complexities of step-families
  • To look at strategies for common step-parenting problems
  • To provide a safe place where concerns can be shared

 

Keeping safeKeeping Safe and Protecting Young Minds - "Protective Behaviour Workshop" (can be focused for either under 5's or 5-11's)

This workshop runs for 2 hours. Work materials and refreshments are provided. Topics covered include:

  • Alerting parents to the dangers children face
  • Risks of playing unsupervised inside and outside the home
  • What to do about bullying
  • How to protect young minds from pornography
  • Safe use of the internet

 

Jumping ChildrenBuilding / Improving Self Esteem in our Children

This workshop runs for 2 hours. Work material and refreshments are provided. Topics covered include:

  • Self Esteem and why it's important
  • Different ways we can show love to our children
  • How we can make children feel loved and why it's important
  • Active listening skills

 

Jumping TeenBuilding / Improving Self Esteem in our Teenagers

This 2 hour practical and interactive workshop has been developed using material from popular Parenting Programmes and research in other areas.  This workshop aims to explore why self esteem is essential to emotional wellbeing and how a parent can help. Resources used promote good adult education practice with a clear purpose and range of learning methods etc.  It also promotes positive parenting and the parent/child relationship.

This workshop runs for 2 hours. Objectives:

  • Talking about sex and being more able to explain some of the risks of early sex
  • The pressure on boys and girls and have greater confidence in the parental role of a life educator

Resources used promote good adult education practice with a clear purpose and range of learning methods etc.  It also promotes positive parenting and the parent/child relationship.

Learning Outcomes & Workshop Objectives:

  • To understand the physical & emotional developmental stages
  • Developing a healthy attitude to sex and sexuality
  • Understanding what self esteem is and why It’s important
  • To recognise and learn how to build self esteem in our girls
  • Understand what damages body image
  • How social networking sites (e.g. facebook) and the virtual world links to self esteem and body image

This 2 hour practical and interactive workshop has been developed following specific feedback from professionals and parents.  This workshop aims to address parents’ concerns and what messages about sex and sexuality they want to put across now and in future.

It is an interactive session with small group work, discussion and case studies, and has been tailored to ensure good adult education practice with a clear purpose and range of learning methods etc.  It also promotes positive parenting and the parent/child relationship.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to;

  • Identify the importance of sexual health
